As some of you may know, the final of the UEFA cup was held in Manchester last night and saw Scottish team Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg battling it out for the title. More than 100,000 Scottish supporters arrived in Manchester throughout the day and Manchester City Council kindly arranged for three big screens showing the game to be erected in areas of the city to accommodate for those Rangers fans who didn’t have a ticket.
However, after a technical fault resulted in one of the screens being unable to show the game, riots broke out. Police were called and have now been said to be ’sickened’ by the minority of Rangers fans who took part in the violence. The broken screen was pelted with bottles and a Zenit fan was stabbed. Police and ambulance crew were also assaulted, leaving a catalogue of injuries.
I personally am so angry with those who caused the trouble. Manchester is a lovely city and a home to me and it’s shocking to think that some supporters could treat it with such disrespect. The state some fans left it in is terrible, there is glass, beer cans and general rubbish absolutly everywhere.
Some Rangers fans blamed the local council’s “shambolic” organisation, but another said the behaviour of his fellow supporters left him “ashamed to be a Scotsman”.
It’s astonishing to me that events such as a football final can cause such violent results. I can only hope that once sobered up, those who contributed to the carnage feel terrible for what they caused.
